For 27 years the NIA COLLECTIVE has provided a space where same gender loving women of African Descent could dance, sing, drum and find community together. Over the last few years community support for our annual gathering has waned to the point that we made the decision to cancel last year’s 2015 Gathering. Instead we will focus on smaller community focused events in the Oakland area that will allow us to shore up our resources for what may be our final gathering on our 30th Anniversary .
Many asked how they can help keep The Gathering going and the answer is here at our new gofundme page. Funds raised will both support our health fair, additional community events and build a foundation to lead The Gathering into the future. Without your support The Gathering will cease to exist. Please donate, share on all of your email lists and social media to spread the word. There are no individual incentives. The incentive is making sure The Gathering survives to pass on to another generation of women! Now is the time to Support NIA!!
As you may know, 2016 will be the last NIA Gathering. We would like to make this a special event commemorating NIA’s long history. To do this, we need maximum participation from community members, past and present board members and anyone who has supported NIA in the past.
We would like to invite you to a Town Hall Meeting on February 13, 2016 at Qulture Collective from 1:00-4:00 P.M. Qulture Collective is located at 1714 Franklin St., Oakland, CA, a short walk from 19th Street BART.
We will be discussing what is needed to produce a phenomenal last gathering (i.e. volunteers, financial aid, vendors and community support). Light snacks and beverages will be provided. We hope to see you there!
